The release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was a really big event in the world of ARPG video games. Skyrim received outstanding reviews, and it is still the best selling game in the Elder Scrolls series. There are many good reasons for this. Most importantly, Skyrim features a huge open world with incredibly complex landscapes. The graphics are also amazing, the details are stunning, and you even get to fight a dragon!
There is a large modding community gathered around various Bethesda’s games. However, Skyrim is probably their most modded game ever. The game came out in 2011, but it still has a large player base. Furthermore, a lot of people are still actively working on mods to improve it. Various modes have helped fix the game’s flaws, like numerous bugs and crashes. However, the most popular mods do much more than that. They offer completely new storylines, thus effectively keeping the game alive.
Some mods have become more popular than others, but Civil War Overhaul is definitely one of the most well-known. This mod allowed players to experience the civil war between the Stormcloaks and the Imperials. This civil war already existed in Skyrim’s original story, but Civil War Overhaul allows players to experience it to a much greater extent.
Apollodown Hides The Mod
Civil War Overhaul has gathered quite a large fanbase thanks to the rich storyline that allowed for different outcomes. Unfortunately, the author, known as Apollodown, decided to hide the mod in October 2016. He removed the file from the download page and replaced it with this message:
So, why did Apollodown decide to do this? A forum argument seems to be the reason. Reportedly, some gamers didn’t like the fact that Apollodown decided to add different races to the Stormcloaks faction in the mod. In the original game, all the members of the Stormcloaks were Nords. The author’s response to the criticism was quite rough. He called the gamers that criticized him “Trump supporters” and “members of the Ku Klux Klan.” The fight raged on until Apollodown decided to hide the Civil War Overhaul mod as a response.
Civil War Overhaul did become available on November 9th, but it didn’t last very long. It was hidden again a week later. In January 2017, Donald Trump won the United States presidential election. Immediately after this event, Apollodown removed the mod permanently. Reportedly, this move was a form of protest against Trump and inappropriate political readings of the mod.
Did Apollodown overreact when he decided to hide the mod permanently? Probably yes. He had every right to do it, but this move only affected the active players of the mod.
